Bamboo Steamers

Bamboo steamers are great for steaming food. The bamboo's texture allows steam to circulate and evaporate, so less moisture will form on the inside of the lid.

How to use a bamboo steamer

Bamboo steamers are normally placed over boiling water instead of cold water. It is common in Asian cooking to boil water in a wok before stacking the bamboo steamers over the water. Where more than one steamer is used, food requiring the most steaming is usually placed in the bottom steamer, with those needing less steaming placed on top.

Arrange the food to be steamed in a flat heat-proof dish or foil pie pan before placing it in the steamer. To be creative, you can place lettuce leaves or bok choy leaves directly on the steamer instead of using heat-proof dishes. This way, you can arrange the food on top of the leaves. It works great when steaming dumplings!

If you are making steamed bread, lightly grease the bamboo slats and place the dough directly onto the steamer. When finished, remember to take off the lid and let the steam disperse before reaching in for the food.

To spice up your dinner table, serve your food with the steamer!
